Meeting Minutes, September 2014

September brought us full circle as we moved back to the barn. Our new home is unrecognizable from its former self and sports a brand new “Flamingo Room”, a killer flat screen, and comfortable seating for all the members. We were joined by new HOWL members Chris P. and Joe D.
Tolga updated the group with the reasons behind the move, followed by a quick progress report on the collaboration brew. An agenda for the October meeting was previewed which will not have a member presentation and will feature Oktoberfest/Marzen and Pumpkin beers. The floor was opened to any questions regarding the special membership meeting held a week earlier and the few questions that were raised were addressed.
The October meeting will be the one year anniversary for the current officers and therefore elections will be held for the new 2014-2015 HOWL officers. As before the elected roles include President, Vice President, and Secretary, plus a newly created Membership officer. Officer selection will be held by majority vote of the current members present at the October meeting.
This month’s presentation was brought to us by new HOWL member Mitch P who covered the complex and often misunderstood topic of real ale and cellarmanship. Mitch has accumulated a gargantuan amount of knowledge over the years and during his travels abroad on the topic, and presented his knowledge with great detail and lots of awesome pictures. I can’t be certain, but there may or may not have been pictures of KISS doing a traditional english folk dance in a field outside a tent… It was a great presentation enjoyed by all and a great way to christen the new flat screen at our new home.

September was Brewer’s Choice month and the following beers were enjoyed:
  • Brian H – Kolsch
  • John K. – Belgian Saison
  • Chris – Belgian Wit
  • Dave A. – Weizenbock
  • MtE + Mike Collaboration – Dopplebock
  • Tony – IPA
  • Rod – IPA
  • K2 – Porter
  • Mitch P. – Barrel aged Russian Imperial Stout
  • Dave A. – Hard Cider

Additionally, Rob and Cathy brought a very interesting commercial beer from some northern island with a misleading name made with Arctic berries!

Next meeting is on Oct 2, and the competition beers will be Marzen and Pumpkin.
